How to Craft Informed Questions During Interview Prep
How to Craft Informed Questions During Interview PrepHow to Craft Informed Questions During Interview Prep At the end of every interview, the hiring manager will say, Do you have any questions for me? This is your moment to shine. Some candidates will say no, thinking that asking a question might send a signal that you dont understand the position. Others just dont prepare for this moment and cant think of anything to ask. Most candidates will be prepared with some questions to askbut are they the right ones? Asking good questions is a great way to set you apart from other candidates.Gearing up for a big interview? Youre in luck. Weve put together a guide on the best questions to ask if you want to impress a recruiter or hiring manager . When you sit down to prepare for your interview , consider these five questions and how you can make them more specific for the job you are applying to.1. I did a little research and saw that youve been at this company for XX years . How has your role evolved? And how has the company evolved in your time here?A perfect opening question, this gives you a chance to build a rapport with the interviewer. Not only does it show your interest in what a career path looks like at the company, but it also shows that you are interested in their career path. Plus, both you and the interviewer just listened to you talk about yourself for an hourwhy not give them the chance to tell you a little bit about their career? Before your interview, look up the interviewers profile on LinkedIn or read their bio on the company page. Then, you can ask about their previous work history or educationanything that shows youve done your research and are generally interested in hearing about their career will help set you apart.2. In thinking about the top-line company objectives, what contributions does this role make to the larger company goals? This is an important question to ask because, when it comes down to it, hiring managers want t o know that you understand the goals and values of the companyand that you believe in them too. By asking this question, you show that you are aligned with the companys goals and want to know how your job fits into those goals. To prep for this kind of question, make sure you know a bit about the companys goals by reading recent articles, press releases, and company social media statements. If you do, when you go to ask this question in your interview, you can name a specific goal or value the company has and ask how your role contributes to it.3. What have been the biggest challenges for this role? One of the fruchtwein important things to remember about job interviews is that you are interviewing the company just as much as they are interviewing you. The goal? To find a good fit for your life. By posing this question in the interview, you showcase that youre not afraid to take on challenges , even if you know the hardest aspects upfront. This will also give you an opportunity to ex plain how you could take on those challenges or what your strategy in the position might look like . A question that opens more opportunities for you to talk about your strong skills is always a good question to ask.An easy way to prepare for this goal is to read through the companys reviews on Glassdoor . Look for people who have previously worked at the company and see if they mention their hardships faced while in their position. Again, this is where your research will come in handy.4. What do you think are the most important qualities for someone in this role to have in order to succeed? You just explained what your best qualities are in the interview, so now you can hopefully find out that you align with the hiring managers idea of the most qualified person for the job. If you hear anything that you think you didnt mention, this also gives you the chance to highlight the fact that you have those qualities. This is a great catch-all question to ask to ensure fit.5. How do you m easure success for this role? Its imperative to ask about how you are going to be measured if you get the job. Do they measure success based on sales numbers? Conversion rates? Customer happiness? What will they expect of you in your first 60 days and what will they be comparing your successes to? This also helps the hiring manager understand that you are very interested in this position and would be joining the company ready to work.Though these are just five questions you can ask a hiring manager or recruiter , there are many other great questions you can ask. As you prepare for an interview, think about these five questions and see if they help you think of any more you can come up with. But remember, if youre going to craft an informed question to ask during your interview, make sure youve done your research ahead of time

Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair
Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert Blair Woman Power, Bio of Belize Plant Manager Niebert BlairArticle Edited by Julia Yeung, ASME Public Affairs and Outreach Intern Interview by Soren MaloneyNiebert Blair works as a Contract Manager for Guyana Power and Light Inc., one of the Demerara Power Plants located on the banks of the Demerara River in Georgetown, Guyana in South America. She is a Chartered Engineer with a Bachelors degree from the University of Guyana and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Niebert grew up in Hopetown, Berbice, a small close-knit village with a small population of about 2,000 people, most of which are zu sich relatives. As a child growing up, she found herself constantly opening and repairing items. She opened her grandmothers radio, unscrewed door locks, and even attempted repairing her own bicycle after observing her cou sins fixing theirs. These experiences fueled her passion for figuring out how things work.I dont think I chose engineering, engineering chose me. I was the best graduating student in the region. My dad wanted me to become a lawyer and I wanted to become a doctor because I wanted to help people, but my mother wanted me to become an engineer.Nieberts mother is a teacher and witnessed her exposure to many technical subjects at school and suggested engineering as a possible career path. In addition, her fathers work as a welder at GuySuCo (Guyana Sugar Corporation) exposed her to the inner workings of a sugar factory. This encouraged her to take the GuySuCo technical training school exam. Although she was the highest scorer, she opted to go to a 2-year technical institute instead. Now as a power engineer Niebert who originally trained for mechanical engineering, acquired the skills to perform work on the electrical engineering side by working with men in the shops from the planning to imp lementation stage.Being involved and getting to the bottom of details, I was hands-on, even to hand a spanner. I was always at the forefront of getting the work done and my hands dirty. I would climb onto transformers to inspect for problems. Her transition into the energy development field came from her desire to pursue a new challenge. There is a shortage of power engineers in the energy sector worldwide with few engineers in the industry and almost no women. As power engineering is a key area in energy development, she was interested in and decided to apply for a job in Belize that would help her develop the skills to become a more rounded engineer in the energy field. She worked in Belize for almost two years.Niebert also faces obstacles when it comes to working in a developing country. The lack of resources, financial constraints, and the limited amount of information available poses challenges when working to develop new systems. In a developing world, its all about dollars and sense, so as engineers we need to make these two combinations work well. I would be happy to know I designed a system without state of the art technology that is 80-95% efficient, that works and gives me a high return on investment. She also finds that she is not scrutinized being a woman in the industry as she has become use to working with men and has even encountered men who have tried to help and support her career advancement. She applies the principles - honesty, trust, and discipline - when it comes to working with anyone.Niebert offers this advice for young women considering a career in engineeringI would encourage everyone to do something they like doing first of all. If a young lady loves engineering, then just go for it- Let beyond the skies be your limit. Mankind has discovered a lot throughout the ages and there is a lot more for us to discover. Engineering is a great career. You have the opportunity to develop and improve systems and most of all make living more comfort able, affordable and rewarding. One of the projects Niebert is working on in Guyana is the Frequency Conversion of the Electrical System. It involves converting the system from 50Hz to 60Hz, which will create huge savings, reduce transmission losses, and establish a single operating frequency in the country. Her advice for engineers working in developing environments is to take the we need to make dollars and sense engineering as a science and art.Engineers must have some general knowledge of what each area involves and its contribution to the overall outcome of the bigger picture. We must think how one thing affects another. As engineers we need to understand the financial and human aspect, how what we do affects the other people we work with.

Tips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions
Tips for Handling Curveball Interview QuestionsTips for Handling Curveball Interview Questions4Perhaps youre a pro at answering all the typical bewerbungsbewerbungsinterview questions. You can list your strengths and weaknesses with ease, and you know to never talk down about a previous boss. But youre in an interview thats wrapping up and youre suddenly asked, So, if you were a salad, what kind of dressing would you have? If your internal thought is something like,Um, what?youre probably not alone.Curveballinterview questions are often used by hiring managers to assess how candidates respond when caught off guard and to see a different side of their personality. While theres no right or wrong answer to curveball interview questions, there are ways you can prepare yourself to answer in the best way possible.Tips for Handling Curveball Interview QuestionsStay calm, and reveal your thought process. One of the reasons hiring managers askstrange interviewquestionsis to throw you off your g ame a bitto see how you perform under pressure, and get a better sense of your thought process. So, no matter how nervous the question makes you, or how surprised you are to hear it, try your best to keep your cool.Youll also want to think out loud. This will show the hiring manager your process- and also prove that theres some real thought behind your response. For instance, if they ask, If you were a tree, what type of tree would you be? dont just say, A palm tree Instead, explain how you got to that answer. Well, I consider myself to be fairly tough and flexible- and Im always growing, especially in my career. So, Id say Im most like a palm tree.Dont take them at surface level.Realize that theres always a reason behind asking a curveball interview question on the part of the interviewer. For example, if youre asked, What kind of superhero would you be? they dont actually want to know that information just for fun. Theyre likely trying to assess how well youd fit on the team, and if youre more of a leader or a follower. Assess what information the interviewer is trying to glean from asking you these types of questions and youll keep yourself in the running.Take time to answer. Its OKtotake a moment and think about your answer. Hiring managers know that theyre throwing you a curveball question, and they wont expect you to have the perfect answer off the bat. As mentioned in the previous tip, determine what the interviewer is really trying to get at, and take a few seconds to think over your answer. Saying something like, Thats a fun question Let me think about it for a minute, will buy you some time.Show your personality. What type of kitchen utensil would you be and why?Whats the belastung thing you watched on TV?What advice would you give your boss?If youre thrown a curveballinterview question, its OK to let your personality shine Smile and even make a joke if its appropriate. While interviewers want to see how you answer the question, they also want to see you r personality and how you handle an odd question off the cuff. If youre totally thrown off by a question, itll probably show through, and they might infer that you cant go with the flow or deal with unexpected issues in the workplace. Relax and answerin a way that will show you are an ideal candidate.Ask to answer later. While this probably isnt the most ideal option, if youre truly drawing a blank, ask to come back to the question later. You could say something like I want to think a little more about this onecan we circle back to it later? This can buy you some time to be mentally preparing an answer. To keep you from getting stuck, remember to not think too hard about it. Come up with a positive answer that shines a light on part of your personality or your work ethic.Practice.The best way to answer curveball interview questions with ease is to practice. A quick Internet search will find you plenty ofsample questions. Try answering a few to get you into the right headspace. You ca n even find sample answers if youre stuck on the best way to answer. Practice on your own, or even with a friend to get some feedback. While theres no way to know if youll even be asked any crazy questions at all, practicing willproperly prepare you to answer any questions that come your wayCheck out morejob interviewing tips.

How to Encourage Meaningful and Needed Conflict at Work
How to Encourage Meaningful and Needed Conflict at WorkHow to Encourage Meaningful and Needed Conflict at WorkConflict avoidance is most frequently the topic when a conflict in organizations is discussed. Conflict resolution, as quickly as possible, is the second most frequent topic. It is bad news because meaningful work conflict is a cornerstone in healthy, successful organizations. Conflict is necessary for effective problem solving and for effective interpersonal relationships. These statements may binnenseem unusual to you. If you are like many people, you avoid conflict in your daily work life. You see only the negative results of conflict. Especially in the Human Resources profession, or as a manager or supervisor, you may even find that you spend too much of your precious time mediating disputes between coworkers. Why People Dont Participate in Appropriate Work Conflict There are many reasons why people dont stand up for their beliefs and bring important differences to th e table. (In organizations, this translates into people nodding in unison when the manager asks if the group agrees, but then complaining about the decision later.) Conflict is usually uncomfortable. Many people dont know how to participate in and manage work conflict in a positive way. In a poorly carried out conflict, people sometimes get hurt. They become defensive because they feel under attack personally. People have to work with certain people every single day, so they are afraid conflict will harm these necessary ongoing relationships. Why Appropriate Work Conflict Is Important Effectively managed work conflict has many positive results for your organization, however. When people can disagree with each other and lobby for different ideas, your organization is healthier. Disagreements often result in a more thorough study of options and better decisions and direction. According to Peter Block, in The Empowered Manager Positive Political Skills at Work (Compare Prices), if you are unwilling to participate in organizational politics and conflict, you will never accomplish the things that are important to you at work, your work mission. And, that would be tragic. So, knowing how to raise issues and participate in meaningful work conflict is key to your success in work and in life. These tips will help. 10 Tips for Participating in Healthy Work Conflict Create a work environment in which healthy conflict is encouraged by setting clear expectations. Foster an organizational culture or environment in which differences of opinion are encouraged. Make differences the expectation and healthy debate about issues and ideas the norm. Placing emphasis on the common goals people share within your organization can help. People have a tendency to focus on the differences experienced with another rather than focusing on the beliefs and goals they have in common with each other. If organizational goals are aligned, and all employees are moving in the same directio n, healthy work conflict about how to get there is respected. If you are a manager or team leader, do this by asking others to express their opinion before you speak your own. Tell people that you want them to speak up when they disagree or have an opinion that is different from others in the group. Reward, recognize and thank people who are willing to take a stand and hilfe their position. You can publicly thank people who are willing to disagree with the direction of a group. Your recognition system, bonus system, pay, and benefits package and performance management process should all reward the employees who practice personal, organizational courage and pursue appropriate work conflict. These employees speak up to disagree or propose a different approach even in the face of pressure from the group to agree. They lobby passionately for their cause or belief, yet, when all the debating is over, they support the decisions made by the team just as passionately. If you experience litt le dissension in your group, examine your own actions. If you believe you want different opinions expressed and want to avoid group conflicts, and you experience little disagreement from staff, examine your own actions. Do you, non-verbally or verbally, send the message that it is really not okay to disagree? Do you put employees in a hot seat when they express an opinion? Do they get in trouble if they are wrong or a predicted solution fails to work? Look inside yourself personally, and even seek feedback from a trusted advisor or staff member, if the behavior of your team tells you that you are inadvertently sending the wrong message. Expect people to support their opinions and recommendations with data and facts. unterschiedlich opinions are encouraged, but the opinions are arrived at through the study of data and facts. Staff members are encouraged to collect data that will illuminate the process orthe problem. Create a group norm that conflict around ideas and direction is expe cted and that personal attacks are not tolerated. Any group that comes together regularly to lead an organization or department, solve a problem, or to improve or create a process would benefit from group norms. These are the relationship guidelines, or rules group members agree to follow. They often include the expectation that all members will speak honestly, that all opinions are equal, and that each person will participate. These guidelines also set up the expectation that personal attacks are not tolerated whereas healthy debate about ideas and options is encouraged. Provide employees with training in healthy conflict and problem-solving skills. Sometimes people fail to stand up for their beliefs because they dont know how to do so comfortably. Your staff will benefit from education and training in interpersonal communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and particularly, non-defensive communication. Goal setting, meeting management, and leadership will also help empl oyees exercise their freedom of speech. Look for signs that a conflict about a solution or direction is getting out of hand. Exercise your best observation skills and notice whether tension is becoming unhealthy. Listen to criticism of fellow staff members, an increase in the number and severity of digs or putdowns, and negative comments about the solution or process. Are secret meetings increasing? In one of my client companies, staff members held email wars in which the nastiness of the emails grew and the list of staff members copied could eventually include the whole company. If you observe that tension and conflict are endangering your workplace harmony, hold a conflict resolution meeting with the combatants immediately. Yes, you do need to mediate. Its okay to have positive conflict but not to allow negative conflict to destroy your work environment. Hire people who you believe will add value to your organization with their willingness to problem solve and debate. Behavioral i nterview questions will help you assess the assertiveness of your potential employees. You want to hire people who are willing to act boldly and who are unconcerned about whether they are well-liked. Look and listen for situations in which the potential employee has stood up for his beliefs, worked with a team to solve problems, or pushed an unpopular agenda at work. Yes, you want a harmonious workplace but not at the sacrifice of everyones success. Make executive compensation dependent upon the success of the organization as a whole as well as the accomplishment of individual goals. Pay executives part of their compensation based on the success of the total organization. It ensures that people are committed to the same goals and direction. They will look for the best approach, the best idea, and the best solution, not just the one that will benefit their own area of interest. This will also ensure that the people in their organizations spend their time problem solving and solution seeking rather than finger-pointing, blaming, and looking to see who is guilty when a problem occurs or a commitment is missed. If you are using all of the first nine tips, and healthy work conflict is not occurring... You need to sit down with the people who report to you directly and with their direct reporting staff and ask them why. Some positive, problem-solving discussion might allow your group to identify and rectify any problem that stands in the way of open, healthy, positive, constructive work conflict and debate. The future success of your organization depends on your staffs willingness to participate in healthy work conflict, so this discussion is worth your time.
